Voices: Program Notes

<-- Back

Voices was written for Violist Barbara Zmich during the Fall of 1994. In general, I see the piece as an expression, in somewhat dream-like images (sometimes bordering on nightmarish), of my psychological/spiritual reaction to the recent conflicts in Bosnia and Rwanda, and the sense of impotence and rage they engendered. Formally, the work is in three sections, which vaguely correspond to the movements of a traditional solo sonata. The first section, after a brief, peaceful introduction, is fast and dramatic. The second section is a lament, occasionally interrupted by distant reflections of the tranquillity of the introduction. The final section is a quasi-scherzo/rondo which also serves to recapitulate transformations of prior material in the piece, without providing a sense of resolution or even the intimation of an answer.
